A strong SaaS pricing page makes it obvious which plan fits which customer, shows the real price a buyer will pay (including VAT where required), and gets them from "that one" to a working checkout in as few steps as possible. Most pricing pages fail not because of the prices themselves, but because visitors cannot quickly work out what they would pay and what they would get.
Here is a practical checklist, with notes specific to selling in South Africa.
Start with the plan structure
Before you design anything, decide how your plans are split. Common approaches:
| Model | How it works | Works well when |
|---|---|---|
| Good / better / best tiers | Three plans with increasing features and limits | Customers range from small to large |
| Per seat | Price per user | Value grows with team size |
| Usage-based | Price per transaction, invoice or unit | Value tracks volume closely |
| Hybrid | Base plan plus usage or seats | You need predictable revenue and fair scaling |
Keep the number of plans small. Three or four self-service plans plus an "Enterprise, contact us" option is enough for most businesses. Every extra plan adds a decision for the visitor.
Name plans for the customer, not for you
"Starter", "Growth" and "Business" describe who the plan is for. Internal names or metal names ("Silver", "Gold") force visitors to read the fine print to find out which one is theirs.
Show prices the way customers will pay them
Display rand prices clearly
If most of your customers are South African, show prices in rands (for example R499 per month). If you also sell internationally, a currency switcher is better than making everyone convert in their head.
VAT on a saas pricing page
If you are a VAT vendor, section 65 of the VAT Act requires advertised or quoted prices for taxable supplies to include VAT, or alternatively to show the VAT-exclusive price, the VAT amount and the VAT-inclusive price with equal prominence. As of September 2026 the standard rate is 15%. Many B2B software companies show "R499 per month excl. VAT" on their pricing page; check with your tax adviser that your presentation meets section 65. See our guide to tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive pricing for how each approach flows through to invoices.
Whatever you choose, be consistent between the pricing page, checkout and the invoice. A customer who sees R499 on the pricing page and R573.85 at checkout will feel misled even if the difference is only VAT.
Monthly and annual toggle
If you offer annual billing, show a monthly/annual switch near the top, and express the annual price both as a per-month equivalent and as the total. For example:
- Monthly: R499 per month
- Annual: R4,990 per year (R415.83 per month equivalent, two months free)
Showing the total avoids the surprise of a large annual charge. For the pros and cons of offering annual plans at all, see annual vs monthly billing.
Make the differences between plans scannable
- Lead with the three to five features that actually drive the decision. Put the long list in a full comparison table further down.
- Use limits people understand: "up to 500 invoices a month" is clearer than "standard volume".
- Highlight one plan as the recommended choice for most visitors. It gives undecided buyers a default.
- Avoid unexplained jargon. A short tooltip or a one-line explanation beats a cryptic feature name.
- Show what is included in every plan once, rather than repeating it in each column.
Reduce risk for the buyer
Price is only part of the decision. The other part is "what if this doesn't work out?" Address that directly:
- Free trial: state the length and whether a card is required. See how to plan a SaaS free trial.
- Cancellation: say how to cancel and whether there is a minimum term.
- Upgrades and downgrades: say that customers can change plans later and how charges are adjusted.
- Payment methods: show the ways people can pay, such as card, debit order and EFT. Seeing a familiar option matters to South African buyers.
- Security and compliance: link to a page explaining how you protect data, rather than scattering badges you cannot back up.
Answer objections with a pricing FAQ
A short FAQ under the table catches the questions that would otherwise go to sales or support:
- Are prices inclusive of VAT?
- Can I pay annually? Is there a discount?
- What happens when I reach a plan limit?
- Can I change or cancel my plan at any time?
- Do you offer discounts for non-profits or education?
- Which payment methods do you accept?
Connect the page to a working checkout
The best pricing page loses sales if the next step is broken. Check the path end to end:
- The plan button leads straight to sign-up or checkout with the plan already selected.
- The price, interval and VAT treatment on checkout match the pricing page.
- Coupon codes, if you advertise them, work at checkout.
- The first invoice and receipt show the same plan name and price.
- The confirmation email tells the customer what happens next, including the next billing date.
Test, don't guess
Change one thing at a time and measure plan selection and completed sign-ups, not only clicks:
- Default toggle position (monthly or annual)
- Which plan is highlighted
- Number of plans
- Wording of the call to action ("Start free trial" vs "Get started")
Small sites often do not have enough traffic for statistically meaningful A/B tests. In that case, watch session recordings, talk to recent sign-ups and ask sales which questions come up most.
How CentraPoint helps
CentraPoint lets you set up subscription packages and plans with free trials, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive pricing and coupons at checkout, then send customers to hosted checkout pages you design and brand (or create checkout sessions via the API). Renewals, invoices and receipts follow the same plan and VAT settings, so what the customer sees on your pricing page carries through to the invoice. You can explore the options on the features page.
Frequently asked questions
How many plans should a SaaS pricing page have?
Three or four self-service plans plus an Enterprise or "contact us" option works for most businesses. More plans make comparison harder and slow down the decision.
Should South African SaaS prices include VAT?
If you are a VAT vendor, section 65 of the VAT Act requires advertised prices to include VAT, or to show the exclusive price, the VAT and the inclusive price with equal prominence. Confirm your presentation with your tax adviser.
Should I show annual or monthly pricing by default?
It depends on your goals. Defaulting to annual can increase annual sign-ups, while defaulting to monthly lowers the entry price. Test with your own visitors and always show the annual total clearly.
What should a pricing page FAQ include?
Cover VAT, payment methods, annual discounts, plan limits, changing or cancelling plans and any trial terms. Use the questions your sales and support teams hear most often.
